Education

Eastern Connecticut State University - BA, English, minor in Women's Studies, magna cum laude, 1992. Clark University - MA, English Literature, 1997. Graduate work in Composition, University of New Hampshire, 2002-2003.

Experience

I have been teaching courses at the college level for over twenty years, including English Composition, Literature, Creative Writing and Women's Studies. I am also an experienced editor, writer, and prolific reader. My passion is working with others to develop their creativity and critical thinking skills. I have strong computer literacy with solid experience in research, publishing, and social media. I also have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working with students of all backgrounds and abilities, especially one-on-one. I prefer to tailor my teaching style to fit the experience, strengths, and needs of each individual student. I have worked with students on every level of college readiness, from matriculating first-year students to Ph.D. candidates, to help them access the tools they need to excel. I'm a fairly casual teacher, not a taskmaster; I feel that students get out of learning what they put into it, and my classes center on discussion of the course material and how it relates to our culture and society. Therefore, a motivated student is going to get more out of my time than one who is indifferent. However, I have plenty of experience teaching the unwilling, and I tend to earn a grudging respect from even the most judgmental and foot-dragging students.

Hobbies

My interests include reading mystery, fantasy, and science fiction literature. I'm also a fan of fan studies, which looks at the creative ways that fans of popular culture access and interact with their favorite books, TV shows, movies, and other media. I'm published in this area, with forthcoming essays on the James Bond franchise and the TV show Supernatural. I also at the moment have a side business screen-printing t-shirts with a friend. Everything we print is our own design, and I enjoy the freedom and creativity involved. My hobbies include stained glass, sewing, woodworking, reading, writing fiction and poetry, gardening, and working on my 1967 Chevy Impala. I'm married with two kids; we also have two dogs, a cat, and several fish, and I hope to acquire a turtle.
